Agriculture in Croatia

Agriculture for the 21st Century that we need in Croatia

At the conference "Croatia we need - agriculture for the 21st century", which was held on October 4th 2017 at the hotel Esplanade, the challenges and future of agriculture in Croatia were discussed, as well as how to promote modern and sustainable production, with better use of the EU's generous funds.


On the Conference there were panels about introducing new technologies and crop insurance, about possible and feasible ways of associating farmers, and about what needs to be done to make the two key economic branches - food production and tourism - better connect. Minister of Agriculture Tomislav Tolušić had an opening presentation and Finance Minister Zdravko Marić with the Prime Minister, were present.


The "Croatia we need" is a project by Večernji list Newspaper, and the conference "Agriculture for the 21st century" Večernji list is carried out with the support of its specialized portal Agrobiz.hr. The conference has, amongst, discussed the promotion of modern and sustainable production, the use of EU funds. The introduction of new technologies and crop insurance, merging the association of farmers, and the linking of food and tourism production.

September, island of Zlarin will host 72-hours Permaculture Design Course


If you were thinking how to grow your own food, build a house with non-industrial materials, or to move out of a city in the future… You were probably thinking of permaculture. This September, island of Zlarin will host 72-hours Permaculture Design Course. It is a chance to attend an international PDC this summer, and to visit Adriatic coast at the same time. In the end of summer, the tourist crowd on Zlarin is finished, so visitors can enjoy great weather (still very warm) and empty beaches on a very quiet island. Centuries old tradition of coral harvesting on the island existed due to very clean sea. Another curiosity is that Zlarin is one of several Croatian car-free islands. Croatia is a good place to learn permaculture: though there aren’t many developed projects yet, this country has one of most vital and fastest growing permaculture scenes in Europe. Some of leading Croatian teachers (Ivan Gregov, Damir Šeler) will give lectures and workshops at this course, it is the team of educators with 10 years of experience. This PDC offers an international certificate, the language is English. As always with PDC, the main focus is on redesign of living spaces into self-sustainable systems.

During 10 intensive days, the course covers: - introduction - 5 elements and 5 catastrophes - what is the present state of environment and society? - basic permaculture principles - zones, sectors, patterns, landscape reading, - soil and plants - analysis and methods for soil improvement, composting, mulching, gardening, - water management - harvesting, recycling, reed bed, compost toilet, aquaculture, - sustainable housing and building techniques, off-grid and DIY energy solutions, - organization - urban permaculture, alternative economy, alternative decision making, sustainable communities. During last three days of the course, participants will design their own future projects.


Who could benefit from such a course?


In Croatia, great respond to PDC was from gardening enthusiasts, those who plan to build an eco-house, or to move to a countryside. Or those who want to make an action group in town, garden on a building terrace, or backyard. It is recommended to people who inherit a land, or plan to buy one. And it has always been popular with those worried for our future on the Planet, or simply fed up with things we see on evening news... Croatian PDCs were great starters for local permaculture groups in southeast Europe.

Accommodation and Contact


Nearby town of Šibenik can be reached by bus, train or highway, Zlarin is connected with regular ship line. Accommodation is in apartments, with two meals per day provided for participants. Price of 2017 PDC at Zlarin (10 days course, education and accommodation with food included) is 450 euros. The course will take place between 22nd September and 1st October 2017. A short history of Olives


Olive tree is an evergreen tree that is known in Europe for about 7000 years. Olive originated in the southern Mediterranean, and the most of its upgrading happened in Crete around 2500 BC. Hence the first traces of the presses, with packaging for storage and preparation for trade to distant destinations, took place. In ancient Greece, the olive was so appreciated that the Athenians have a story regarding the goddess Athena and her counterpart Poseidon. Poseidon offered a source of salt water and a horse, and Athens with a throw of her spear to the ground of Acropolis bestowed an olive. The Athenians chose Athena as its patron saint of their city, so a symbol of the city of Athens became an olive branch with its fruits.

An olive is still very much appreciated in many ways, but it certainly has a decisive role in maintaining health. Olive on the Adriatic is considered the Tree of Life. It is said, the olive is as a mother, and if you leave her, and do not you come to her a few years back you will still be able to rely on it. Island of Zlarin is an oasis of peace and beauty

Zlarin is a small island placed in the Dalmatian coast in Croatia, close to the city of Šibenik. During the winter there are around 250 residents. That number increases to approximately 3000 residents in the summer. In its history, Zlarin had a large population of migrants. It is an island from which people left, but also continued living on.  Zlarin has some landmarks, the longest island seafront in Croatia? It is 131 meters long and 16 meters wide from where you have an amazing view. Its highest spot is hill Klepac (169 m) from which you will have an unforgettable view. From the top of the hill, during the sunny days, you can see the mountain of Velebit and far into the distance, the volcanic island of Jabuka.

There are cypress forests, pine forests, rosemary forests, figs, olives and other Mediterranean plants. Internal parts of the island are uninhabited, covered with dense forests and underbrush. It’s called the green island with its rights.

The climate is Mediterranean, middle Adriatic type. The prevailing wind is jugo. Because of being close to the land, climatic characteristics are transitional. Zlarin has about 2700 sunny hours annually which makes it one of the sunniest Adriatic islands? Annual rainfall is around 700mm, and it falls rarely during summer.

Fruits Vegetables Comparison

What botany and culinary fruits and vegetables represent


The reason for this confusion is that the fruits and vegetables are grasped differently in botany, than in culinary practice. According to botany, fruits are all those plants, or structures that have seeds and which develop from impregnated flower. Fruit is, therefore, what you grow as a result of the plant and contains much more sugar than vegetables. On the other hand, a vegetable is any structure that is formed from other parts of the plant. Therefore, when it is said that you eat vegetables, it refers to the leaves of plants, their stems, roots and tubers. Vegetables are what people plant every year, while fruits come from perennial plants.

The group of plants that are "neither here nor there", and that something between fruits and vegetables, in addition to tomatoes, are peppers, zucchini, squash, cucumbers and olives. All these plants, because of the way they eat and prepare classified as vegetables, although because of the biological characteristics, they are closer to botanical fruit group, therefore are botanicaly fruits. While plants which we consider and consume as fruits are botanicaly vegetables: watermelon, melon, strawberries.
